The key priorities for the activities in the field of Harmonization and Exchange of Economic and Social Statistical Data and Information are defined by Goal 13: “Harmonization and Exchange of Economic and Social Statistical Data and Information” of the “BSEC Economic Agenda Towards and Enhanced BSEC Partnership”, adopted in 2012.

The main activities are carried out by the BSEC Working Group on Harmonization and Exchange of Economic and Social Statistical Data and Information, established in 1992, with the aim to establish a system of exchange of statistical data and economic information, to harmonize the statistical methods and definitions, utilize international classifications, ensure data compatibility and create the basis for a common economic language in all activities of the BSEC Member States.

The BSEC Member States agreed initially to establish within the State Institute of Statistics of Türkiye, the BSEC Coordination Centre for the Exchange of Statistical Data and Economic Information.

The Meeting of the BSEC Ministers in charge of Economy, held in Yalta on 23 May 2013, adopted a Joint Declaration, calling upon the Member States to consider possibilities for reactivating and strengthening the work of the BSEC Coordination Centre for the Exchange of Statistical Data and Economic Information.

The Meeting of the Heads of Statistical Offices of the BSEC Member States was held on 23 June 2016, in Moscow, where they adopted a Joint Statement.

After some years of inactivity, thanks to the efforts of the Country Coordinator, the Republic of Bulgaria, this Working Group met on 26 March 2021 and 13 December 2023. The participants discussed possible ways and means of potentially revitalizing the exchange of comparable and reliable data between the BSEC Member States and reactivating the BSEC Coordination Centre for the Exchange of Statistical Data and Economic Information and its potential role in the organization’s future. They approved the Plan of Action for 2021, whose implementation was extended later for one more year, until 31 December 2022.

On 4-5 December 2021, the Country Coordinator organized an online seminar on the “Challenges Faced by the Official Statistics during the Covid-19 Pandemic” with the participation of experts from Member States and guests from International Organizations.

The main Challenge of the Working Group remains the revitalization of the BSEC Coordination Centre for the Exchange of Statistical Data and Economic Information.
